Rookie Rankings - December 27, 2005
By John Schuhmann

Andrew Bogut gave us the top rookie moment of the season this week when he hit the game-winning shot (video) at the buzzer to beat the Spurs on Tuesday. In our minds, that tops Nate Robinson's game-winner (video) from earlier in the season. Bogut's game falls short of Chris Paul's near triple-double against the champs last week when it comes to top performances of the season though. Another candidate in that category was Ike Diogu's 27 points on 13-of-15 shooting in losing effort against the Pistons on Friday. It seems the two best teams in the league bring out the best in the rookie class.

Bogut's solid play and flair for the dramatic vault him three spots in this week's rankings. Disagree? Is his game-winner not your top rookie moment of the season so far? E-mail Us and let us know why.

If you haven't seen Chris Paul's move on T.J. Ford from Friday (or even if you have), check it out here. Enjoy. The bandwagon is getting crowded.
2. CHANNING FRYE, C, NEW YORK
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
27.5 14.6 6.3 1.0 0.56 1.08 .516 .333 .877
Last week: 2
Channing Frye has done most of his work from the outside, but he has also shown some flashes of a low-post game. As teams adjust to him, he will need to show more of that to stay at the level at which he has been playing.
3. ANDREW BOGUT, C, MILWAUKEE
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
27.2 8.7 7.2 2.1 0.84 0.96 .537 .000 .604

Andrew Bogut's game-winner (video) was just the capper on a great night against the world champs. Bogut scored 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting, grabbed nine boards and blocked two shots in the Bucks' win. A few nights later, he went for 14 and nine, shooting 6-of-7 from the field in a win over Paul's Hornets. The big Aussie is getting it done and the Bucks are climbing in the Central.
4. CHARLIE VILLANUEVA, F, TORONTO
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
26.3 12.2 5.6 1.0 0.77 0.73 .453 .316 .632
Last week: 3
Charlie Villanueva missed Monday's game with a calf contusion and played just 27 total minutes in the Raptors' other two games this week. The Raps finish their four-game road trip in Detroit tonight where CV will face the toughest frontline in basketball.
5. DERON WILLIAMS, G, UTAH
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
30.7 11.5 2.9 5.0 0.85 0.26 .388 .330 .729
Last week: 4
Deron Williams is still struggling from the field (11-of-37 this week), but when he left the game Monday, the Grizzlies took advantage of the Jazz. He also had assists on Utah's biggest shots of the night.
6. SARUNAS JASIKEVICIUS, G, INDIANA
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
23.8 9.3 2.4 3.0 1.04 0.12 .443 .402 .902

Sarunas Jasikevicius has not adjusted to the move to shooting guard, shooting just .263 from the field and .182 from downtown this week. We expect him to get back on track soon, unless Frank was right all along.
7. JOSÉ CALDERÓN, G, TORONTO
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
29.5 7.0 3.0 6.4 1.00 0.04 .428 .156 .872

After missing two games with a bruised heel, José Calderón came back to lead the Raptors to a big victory in Houston. His 2.91 assist/turnover ratio tops all rookies and is eighth overall.
8. LUTHER HEAD, G, HOUSTON
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
27.8 9.3 3.6 2.5 1.04 0.04 .395 .407 .636

With the Rockets battling so many injuries, Luther Head is getting a chance to take plenty of shots. He made 8-of-17 for 20 points in Wednesday's loss to Toronto, but followed that up with a 2-of-13 performance in Denver on Friday.
9. SALIM STOUDAMIRE, G, ATLANTA
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
21.0 10.2 2.0 1.4 0.48 0.12 .454 .413 .870

Salim Stoudamire had a nice game in Friday's win over the Sixers, scoring 13 points on 6-of-9 from the field, helping the Hawks to their fifth win in seven games.
10. JOEY GRAHAM, F, TORONTO
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
20.3 7.0 3.1 0.7 0.44 0.11 .485 .324 .804
Last week: 10
Joey Graham shot a combined 8-of-11 from the field, including 3-of-4 from downtown in the Raptors' two wins in Orlando and Houston this week. Graham is getting consistent minutes these days and his play has been more consistent of late as well.
NOTEWORTHY
We gave Ike Diogu (GSW) very serious consideration for the 10 spot this week, but Joey Graham played well enough to hold on to it. Diogu is right there though. We'll call him 10.5. Check out what Warriors' assistant coach, John McLeod had to say about Diogu and the other Warrior rookies.
Danny Granger (IND) had his best game of the season in Wednesday's win over the Clippers. Granger shot 8-of-11 from the field for 16 points and added seven rebounds and three steals.
Yaroslav Korolev (LAC) got his first real chance to play on Friday in Charlotte and he responded with seven points in 14 minutes.
Nate Robinson (NYK) single-handedly shot the Knicks back into this Monday's game against New Jersey, hitting 5-of-6 from downtown. Robinson now leads all qualified rookies at .487 from beyond the arc.
Marvin Williams (ATL) scored a career-high 26 points in 26 minutes on 9-of-14 shooting and grabbed seven boards in Tuesday's loss in Miami.

LETTER OF THE WEEK
Being the best rookie in the league should mean a lot more things than just scoring the most points on your team, which Chris Paul is doing. Jose Calderon is a player whose stats do not accumulate to the amount that he has left on the floor, and I think that you should take that into consideration. The three rookies as a whole are doing alot for Toronto. Take this into consideration, together as three, name any other rookie that is going to help Toronto as much as these three. I mean Jose Calderon wasn't even drafted...No-one had even heard of him, and he's showing that he can play some ball, yet somehow he isn't ranked in the top 10. By the way, watch a Raptors game...
Jack - Mississauga, Ont.

What rankings were you reading, Jack? Calderon has been in the Top 10 since Day One. We're big fans, but there's not much of a comparison between what he has done and what Chris Paul has done. Paul has turned his team around. The same can't really be said about the Raptor rookies. They show great promise and they have brought some energy to Toronto, but Chris Paul is simply the best rookie out there and one of the best point guards in the league right now. Watch a Hornets game...
